Saint Louis Sudbury School
3636 Texas Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63118

We are located inside Intersect Arts Center in the Gravois Park neighborhood of South City, where Sudbury students have access to an art room, music room and lounge, library, kitchen, dance studio, a yard, hallway, and vibrant neighborhood!

Transportation
Most families drive their children to school and some students take public transportation. We have a greatly-utilized family messaging group where caregivers can arrange carpools with each other.

The Spaces We Use

Dance Studio
A wide open space to move! Students are free to play active games in the dance studio every day. No waiting for a twice weekly PE class like in many conventional schools, students can move their bodies whenever they need or desire to. In addition, they are able to vote to use the School Meeting budget if they are interested in hiring an instructor for dance, martial arts, or other movement activities.

Art Room
Our art room is full of supplies that students are free to utilize when inspiration strikes.
We are stocked with a variety of papers and canvases, paints, drawing materials, clay, hot glue guns, many crafting supplies, tinkering supplies, sewing machines and sewing supplies, and of course plenty of crayons, markers, and colored pencils. Our student-led Safety Committee certifies students of any age to use tools or materials that might be hazardous (such as hot glue guns, aerosol based materials, or sewing machines) in a safe manner. The art room also serves as a multi-purpose room. It has large tables and a small stage that we utilize for our School Meeting three times a week, as well as for family style meals, larger group game play, and many other student-initiated activities.

Music Room and Lounge
The music room is an especially cherished place in the school because that is where our students most frequently mingle with the musicians who work out of Intersect Arts Center. In the day to day, the room is used as a quiet lounge where students can play multi-user video games together, talk, nap, and hang out with each other. This space is especially attractive to teens! Attached to the larger music room is a recording studio with two sound booths. The Intersect musicians are not Sudbury employees, but historically have been enthusiastic about mentoring students who show great interest in music and respect for the space and the artists’ time. Students have in turn helped set up for music events and experienced behind-the-scene aspects of music production and performance. Sudbury students have access to electric and acoustic guitars, a bass guitar, and a piano all available for play every day.

Library
Our library is our “own little corner” among the plethora of shared space we enjoy. This room is where we have books and games to browse, toys to explore, a TV with a PS4 console set up, our students lockers/cubbies, and a mini food prep area with a fridge, microwave, toaster oven, and dishes for lunch that don’t require full kitchen use. We also host a mini-library of Self-Directed Education books (including many books about the Sudbury model) for students and caregivers who want to learn more about the Sudbury model.

Hallway
One of the more utilized spaces in our school, the grand hallway that leads to our activity rooms is a space students use to hang out and talk with each other, play board games, read, and play guitar and sing together. The full wall of windows offers a vitamin D-filled sunny space that is hard to resist on cold days!

Kitchen
Because the programming schedule at Intersect is most busy in the afternoon and evenings, we have access to their commercial kitchen almost daily. Students are able to practice many cooking skills with a wide variety of high quality kitchen tools and appliances. We are happy to be a part of maintaining and caring for this valuable space available to us!

Yard
With certification from the Safety Committee, students can go outside and play when they are moved to do so. Our yard has one of the oldest trees in South City, and room to spread out to play separately or together. We have access to a large cement pad for play as well as a fire pit, and a hose for making mud.

Our neighborhood
Our school is located just two blocks from the vibrant Cherokee Street Arts district. Students are welcome to propose a walking outing any day, and in the past we have walked to get Mexican food from some of the best Mexican eateries in the city, explored historic buildings, and checked out local businesses. We are thrilled to have such close access to so many small businesses and local artisans, especially because historically, Sudbury students have a penchant for becoming small business owners. In addition, we are a 10 minute walk to Benton Park, which hosts a playground, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, ponds, and walking/biking paths. To leave the campus, students are required to be certified by Safety Committee, and all outings require at least three School Meeting members.
